Living in an Instant EVERYTHING world, we take for granted how the processes and thrill of taking and receiving photos, especially when your vision becomes reality as you’d imagined or seen in your mind’s eye.
It’s hard for many today to imagine how people have never seen themselves, often even rarely in mirrors.
When I realized this 30 years ago, “shooting subjects” in the furthest most remote placing during my travels, I made a vow to GIFT them back to my subjects years later.

During my search for a new country to teach, I made a point of
- Returning photos of Laotian Monks on the border of Thailand their photos – I’d visited them for about a week 2013-14,
- Return to Huế, visiting Michelle Hoang’s family as well as
- Thiên Mụ Pagoda – returning photos to those old friends Michelle, Bri and I had tutored for three weeks since we couldn’t work with these children at the orphanage [Red Tape]
Of course, the more you shoot, the more you recycle the Return

Some children never get adopted. Others choose NOT getting adopted; these are their families. Leaving them behind or being separated from them is unimaginable to many of them.*
